What Actually Happens Inside an Automated Bar

A plain look at what an automated bar actually is, how it pours a drink in seconds, and why it's turning up in venues that don't have room for a full bar crew.

Order a drink at a stadium concourse, a hotel lobby, or an airport lounge these days, and there’s a decent chance no one poured it by hand. The touchscreen, the mixing unit behind the counter, the cup filling up in a few seconds, that’s an automated bar, and it’s become common enough that most people have used one without thinking much about how it works.

It’s a dispensing system, not a robot with arms

Despite the name, there’s usually no visible robot. An automated bar is a countertop unit connected to BIB (bag-in-box) and bulk ingredient lines, up to 16 BIB and 10 bulk inputs in TendedBar’s configuration, that mixes a programmed recipe and pours it into a cup when a guest taps an order on the screen. The mechanics are closer to a soda fountain than a sci-fi bartender.

Every pour is the same pour

The upside of taking a human out of the loop for every single drink isn’t just speed, it’s consistency. A recipe programmed once comes out the same way at 11am and at 11pm, whether the venue is slow or slammed. That matters more than it sounds like it should: inconsistent pours are one of the more common complaints venues have about high-turnover bar staff.

Self-serve, semi-attended, or staffed, it depends on what’s being poured

Coffee, soda, and other non-alcoholic drinks can typically run fully self-serve. Alcohol is a different story, it needs someone verifying age, attended or semi-attended, and exactly how that works depends on where the venue is and its own rules. TendedBar sorts out that part with each venue directly rather than applying one blanket policy.

Where they actually show up

Stadiums and arenas were early adopters simply because of volume, but the same logic applies anywhere a venue needs to pour a lot of drinks fast without staffing up for it: hotels, casinos, airports, theme parks, and a growing number of restaurants and office buildings. It’s less about the type of venue and more about the mismatch between demand and available staff.

A few things people usually ask

Is this the same as a vending machine?

No, a vending machine hands over something that was already made and sealed. An automated bar mixes the drink itself from raw ingredients when it’s ordered.

Can it pour alcohol?

Yes, but it needs attended or semi-attended service for age checks, and the details depend on local rules and the venue’s own policy.

Does a venue still need staff?

For non-alcoholic service, often not much. For alcohol, someone still needs to be present to verify age and keep an eye on the station.
